What are the rules of golf?

For the full and updated rules, see USGA website

The rules of golf are a set of standards that govern the play of the game. These rules are established by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews (R&A) and the United States Golf Association (USGA). The rules cover everything from how to play each hole and the order of play, to how to resolve disputes and disqualifications.

Some of the basic rules of golf include:

  1. The ball must be played as it lies, without moving or altering it in any way.

  2. Players must take their shots in turn, based on the order of play.

  3. Players must complete each hole in the fewest number of strokes possible.

  4. Players are not allowed to touch the ground with their club or their hand in or near the area of their ball, except to lift or move the ball.

  5. Players must play the course as it is laid out, without taking shortcuts or altering their route in any way.

  6. Players are not allowed to use any artificial devices or equipment that may give them an unfair advantage.

These are just a few of the many rules that govern the game of golf. If you're interested in learning more about the rules, you can find a full list on the R&A website.
